Practice Without Writeups
Professional testers do not randomly run tools until something works.
Per-challenge method
- 01Read scope. Write, in one sentence, what success looks like.
- 02Map the environment before touching anything active.
- 03List 3-5 plausible hypotheses ranked by likelihood.
- 04Enumerate to raise or lower each hypothesis.
- 05Test the top hypothesis with the smallest possible action.
- 06Record evidence: command, output, timestamp.
- 07If evidence contradicts the hypothesis, change strategy. Do not double down.
Rule of thumb
If you cannot say what you are testing and why, stop running tools. Ten minutes of thinking beats an hour of noisy scans.
